Phuket Airport Transfer Guide
Everything you need to know about getting from the airport to your hotel in Phuket
Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits at the northern tip of the island, while most beach resorts are on the west coast 30–60 minutes south. The Phuket airport taxi system is controlled by a local cooperative that charges inflated fixed prices — significantly more than what a Grab ride would cost. Pre-booking a private transfer is the smartest move, as it's typically cheaper than the airport taxi counter and your driver meets you inside arrivals.
Phuket International Airport (HKT) — 32 km to Patong Beach, travel time 45–60 min, transfers from $10.
Here are the most popular areas in Phuket and what to expect for the transfer from the airport:
Transfer time: 45–60 min from HKT · Price: $25–35
Phuket's most famous beach and nightlife hub. Bangla Road, beach clubs, shopping. Busy and loud but full of energy.
Transfer time: 50–70 min from HKT · Price: $28–38
Quieter family-friendly beaches south of Patong. Better sand, less nightlife. Popular with European package tourists.
Transfer time: 30–45 min from HKT · Price: $22–30
Upscale beach areas with luxury resorts and beach clubs. Quieter than Patong, closer to the airport.
Transfer time: 60–80 min from HKT · Price: $30–40
The southern tip of the island. Local feel, excellent seafood, beautiful Nai Harn beach. Furthest from the airport.
Transfer time: 35–50 min from HKT · Price: $20–28
The charming old town with Sino-Portuguese architecture, street art and the best local food on the island.
The airport taxi counter charges fixed rates: 800–1,000 THB to Patong, 1,000–1,200 THB to Kata/Karon. A Smart Bus runs to Patong for 170 THB but takes 90+ minutes with stops. Grab works but drivers are sometimes blocked from entering the airport zone. A pre-booked transfer costs $25–35 to Patong and includes meet-and-greet — usually cheaper than the taxi counter.
A pre-booked private transfer is the best option for virtually all Phuket visitors. It's cheaper than the airport taxi counter, more reliable than Grab at HKT, and takes you directly to your resort. The Smart Bus is fine for solo budget travelers heading to Patong only.
Phuket is a large island — distances between beaches are significant. If you plan to explore multiple beaches during your stay, consider renting a car or motorbike after your airport transfer. The west coast road can be slow during sunset hours as everyone drives back from the beaches.
Phuket is one of the best places in Thailand to rent a car. The island has good roads and parking at most beaches. If you plan to explore beyond your resort beach, a rental car gives you freedom to visit Phuket Town, different beaches and viewpoints on your own schedule.
A taxi or pre-booked transfer is the best choice for the airport-to-hotel journey. But if you plan to explore beyond Phuket, consider renting a car from our partner smartcarrental.com for transparent pricing and free cancellation.
