Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about airport taxis and transfers in Asia

How do I book an airport transfer in Asia?

Pre-booking online is the easiest method. Choose your airport, enter your destination, flight number and passenger count, then pay securely. You will receive a booking confirmation and your driver's contact details. On arrival, your driver will be waiting at the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name.

How much does an airport taxi cost in Asia?

Prices vary widely by country and distance. A Bangkok city center transfer starts around $8–12, Singapore around $18–25, and Tokyo around $90–130. Bali, Vietnam and the Philippines are among the most affordable. See individual airport pages for specific price guides.

Is it safe to take a taxi in Asia?

Licensed and pre-booked taxis are safe throughout Asia. The main risk is unlicensed touts who target tourists — particularly in Bangkok, Bali, Manila and Delhi. Always use official taxi counters or pre-book your transfer. Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you unsolicited inside the terminal.

What is a private transfer vs a shared shuttle?

A private transfer means a vehicle is booked exclusively for you and your group — it goes directly from the airport to your hotel. A shared shuttle collects multiple passengers and makes several stops, which takes longer but costs less. For most travelers with luggage, a private transfer is more comfortable and not much more expensive.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Most reputable transfer providers monitor your flight in real time. If your flight is delayed, your driver will adjust their arrival time automatically. You typically do not pay any extra for reasonable delays. Check the terms of your specific booking for details.

Can I cancel my booking?

Most transfer bookings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the scheduled pickup. Some bookings allow cancellation up to 1 hour before. Always check the cancellation policy when you book.

Do I need to tip my driver?

Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated. In Thailand, a 50–100 THB tip is customary for good service. In Japan, tipping is not expected and can even be considered impolite. In Singapore, tipping is optional. In India and Southeast Asia, rounding up the fare or giving a small tip is welcomed.

Can the driver help with my luggage?

Yes — private transfer drivers typically assist with luggage as standard. If you have unusually large amounts of luggage or oversized items (e.g. bicycles, surfboards), note this when booking so the right vehicle size is arranged.

What vehicle types are available?

Depending on your destination, you can usually choose from: standard sedan (1–3 passengers), minivan (4–7 passengers), or minibus (8+ passengers). Business class and premium vehicles are also available at most major airports.

Which airports in Asia are hardest to navigate?

Bali (DPS) and Manila (MNL) are notorious for aggressive unlicensed touts. Bangkok's Don Mueang (DMK) is also known for confusing taxis. Delhi (DEL) and Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) can be overwhelming for first-time visitors. Pre-booking eliminates the hassle at all of these.

Is Grab or Uber available at Asian airports?

Grab operates in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. Uber has largely withdrawn from Asia but operates in some markets. However, many airports prohibit Grab/Uber from picking up inside terminal areas — you may need to walk to a designated pickup zone. A pre-booked private transfer typically includes a meet-and-greet inside the terminal.

How far in advance should I book?

You can book as little as a few hours in advance for most routes, but for peak travel periods (Christmas, Chinese New Year, Songkran in Thailand) we recommend booking at least 24–48 hours ahead to guarantee availability.
