32 km · 45–60 min · From $22–30
Patong Beach is Phuket's biggest and most famous resort area, known for its wide sandy beach, Bangla Road nightlife and endless shopping. The 32 km drive from Phuket Airport crosses the island from north to west and includes a mountain pass — it takes 45–60 minutes. The airport taxi cooperative charges inflated fixed prices, and Grab drivers are often blocked from entering the airport zone. Pre-booking is the smartest option.
| Option | Price (est.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked transfer | $22–30 | Fixed price, meet & greet, door-to-door |
| Metered taxi | $25–35 (airport taxi counter) | Variable — depends on traffic and surcharges |
| Ride-hailing app | $15–22 (limited availability) | Upfront pricing, may have surge |
The airport taxi counter charges 800–1,000 THB to Patong (non-negotiable). The Smart Bus runs to Patong for 170 THB but takes 90+ minutes with multiple stops and only runs during the day. Grab costs 500–700 THB but availability at HKT is unreliable. A pre-booked transfer costs $22–30 and meets you at arrivals.
A pre-booked transfer is the best option for virtually all travelers to Patong. It costs less than the airport taxi counter, is more reliable than Grab at Phuket airport, and provides door-to-door service. The Smart Bus only makes sense for solo budget travelers who don't mind the slow ride.
Grab technically works at Phuket airport but the local taxi cooperative discourages app-based drivers from entering the pickup zone. You may need to walk 5–10 minutes to a pickup point, which is not ideal with luggage.
A taxi or transfer is perfect for the airport-to-hotel journey. But if you plan to explore beyond Patong Beach — visiting multiple beaches, temples or national parks — a rental car gives you freedom to go at your own pace.
