Ho Chi Minh City Airport Transfer Guide
Everything you need to know about getting from the airport to your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) is uniquely located — just 7 km from the central District 1, making it one of Asia's most conveniently placed airports. However, the short distance is deceptive: traffic in HCMC is some of the most chaotic in the world, and the journey can take 20 minutes or 90 minutes depending on the time of day. Fake taxi companies with rigged meters are a persistent problem. Grab or a pre-booked transfer is strongly recommended.

Here are the most popular areas in Ho Chi Minh City and what to expect for the transfer from the airport:

The tourist heart. Ben Thanh Market, Bui Vien backpacker street, Notre Dame Cathedral, War Remnants Museum.

Modern Korean-influenced district with malls, international restaurants and a suburban feel. Popular with expat families.
Transfer time: 30–50 min from SGN · Price: $8–12
Thao Dien area with expat villas, craft breweries and upscale riverside dining. The new cool neighborhood.
Metered taxis cost 120,000–200,000 VND ($5–8) to District 1 — but ONLY with Mai Linh or Vinasun. Fake companies charge 3–10x more. Grab costs 80,000–150,000 VND ($3–6). Airport bus 109 runs to the center for 20,000 VND ($0.80). A pre-booked transfer costs $5–10 with meet-and-greet.
Grab is the cheapest and most convenient option for HCMC airport transfers. A pre-booked transfer adds meet-and-greet and is only $2–3 more. Both are far safer than risking a fake taxi. The bus is fine for solo budget travelers but is slow in HCMC traffic.
HCMC rush hours (7–9 AM, 5–7:30 PM) can triple your transfer time. The airport is technically in Tan Binh district, and the route to District 1 passes through some of the most congested streets in the city. If arriving during rush hour, budget at least 50 minutes even though the distance is just 7 km.
