The airport taxi counter charges fixed rates: 150,000 IDR to Kuta, 250,000 IDR to Seminyak, 400,000–500,000 IDR to Ubud. Grab technically works but drivers can't enter the airport compound, requiring a confusing walk to a pickup zone. A pre-booked transfer costs $8–25 depending on destination and includes a driver waiting inside arrivals with your name.
A pre-booked private transfer is the clear winner at Bali airport. It costs less than the airport taxi counter, avoids the confusing Grab pickup system, and your driver meets you at arrivals. For Ubud (90 min drive), pre-booking is essential — the airport taxi price to Ubud is outrageous.
Bali traffic is terrible, especially around Denpasar, Kuta and the Seminyak-Canggu corridor. The drive to Ubud can take 60 minutes or 2 hours depending on conditions. If arriving during rush hour (8–10 AM, 4–7 PM), add 30–60 minutes to the estimates above.
Bali is great for self-driving if you're comfortable with Asian traffic. A rental car or scooter gives you freedom to explore the rice terraces, temples and beaches at your own pace. The roads to Ubud and the northern coast are scenic and relatively easy to navigate.
